No gongs toll the hours. No drills mark his days. There is nothing atop this mountain save that which he demands of himself, and his demands are simple.
He trains, for the monsters are fierce. He makes silk flowers, because it keeps the hands nimble and calms him. He studies books on the infernal machines, because even with the Empire fallen, machines will not be kept at bay; best he learn their secrets.
He does not think of Elaine and Owain. In the silence, it is easier. In the solitude, there are few reminders.
