Yes, that makes perfect sense. One of my newly-discovered pieces of headcanon, which is actually mentioned vaguely in this fic, is that Odin raised Kain to be Cecil's left hand: never the heir, always the enforcer. He was meant to be the one who skulks in darkness (also: why Odin was so furious that Kain took the Dragoon's path instead of Dark Knight; no you asshole you're not supposed to be the honorable one, you are THE DUDE RUNNING THE SHIT BECAUSE THE KING SHOULDN'T DIRTY HIS HANDS.)
I think Edge is a good guy who covers up a fundamental fear of screwing up the things that really matter by running his mouth too fast and messing up the little things, because then the expectations for the important things aren't so high and he can be assured someone will watch to catch him if he's going to do something more stupid than usual. The thought of failing completely on his own merits (or lack thereof) horrifies him, so he's (perhaps subconsciously) built expectations so that people will watch him and keep him in check; it's the only way he knows to make sure he won't go completely off the cliff and ruin Eblan forever. He owes his parents more than that.
Yessssss, working together to be together. This is me with Ashe and Balthier, only a lot of times they...just break themselves on their own stubbornness instead of bending enough to be happy (but they wouldn't be who they are if they didn't.)
