Sometimes he pretended to be wounded worse than he really was. Rosa would bend close to him, smelling of sunlight and fresh air and flowers. Her fingertips were warm and gentle on his skin, and her magic felt like a caress, sweet and tingling and oh, so good. He reveled in those tiny stolen moments when all her attention was on him, all the caring and concern in her eyes reserved solely for him, and so he sometimes pretended he needed her help more than he did, because being without her was worse than the self-inflicted wounds to his pride.
